Peter is convinced Heidi saw his treehouse and he sulks. He decides to go to the meadow on his own and Heidi is left with Grandfather. They both go to the blacksmith in the village, where Heidi surprises Karl and his gang as they plan to find and attack Peter’s treehouse.
Orphan girl Heidi is sent to live with her grandfather in the alps under the false promise that she would eventually return to her aunt, who in actual fact cannot care for her anymore. She's excited for her trip, but is surprised to learn that her people who know her grandfather don't think much of him. He's a hermit with a bad temper, and there are all kinds of nasty rumors about the man floating around in the nearest village. Heidi is happy to give him the benefit of the doubt, however, even if his reluctance to accept her into his home couldn't be more obvious.
